Contribute.sg — Helping Frontline Workers and Vulnerable During Covid-19

Since the Covid-19 virus escalated Singapore’s Dorscon level from green to yellow and then to orange, it has been difficult to obtain some items such as masks, sanitizers and thermometers.

How does Contribute.sg help?

Two Singaporeans decided to set up contribute.sg to enable those with spare masks, sanitizer, thermometers and other hygiene items to donate them.

These contributions help workers in the frontline sectors, such as medical institutions, VWOs and NGOs.

Contribute.sg wanted to help fellow Singaporeans show that they have big hearts instead of hate and fear during this crisis.

Since they started this online initiative, they saw that many individuals have stepped up to support the community, and also, there are many other ground up efforts that emerged to help the different sectors.

This shows that we are not as ‘uncaring’, ‘no emotions’ as what others think of Singaporeans.

However on the down side, Contribute.sg also encountered pranksters and opportunists who were trying to capitalise on this situation for laughter and personal gain.

What gaps does Contribute.sg observe?

Contribute.sg notes that there are still gaps where some migrant workers, homeless, cleaners and other vulnerable groups which have not been reached out to by VWO and NGOs.

Fortunately, there are several organisations, such as Back2Basics which supports the homeless, working with Contribute.sg.

The founders of Contribute.sg shared a couple of experiences that also touched them.

“Truly touched by this Indonesian Chinese, who having heard the story of our Contribute SG brought us a carton of hand sanitisers immediately after touching down in Singapore. We want to say a big thank you for extending kindness to us in Singapore.”

“Catholic Welfare Service is not only a recipient but also a contribution. Was touched on the kindness on receiving and giving.”

What does Contribute.sg foresee Singapore will need more of in future?

“Other than the current material items, such as mask, hand sanitizer and thermometers, I think what we need as whole of Singapore is the unity and solidarity to overcome this adversity together.

Singaporeans should continue to be proactive to step forward to contribute to the society in any forms within their capabilities.”
