About Downtown East and NTUC Club

As part of the Labour Movement’s push to provide better welfare for workers, Downtown East (managed by NTUC Club) is one initiative to provide affordable social and recreational facilities for union members and Singaporean workers.

NTUC Club was set up in 1986 to provide affordable resort-style amenities to Singapore’s workforce. In 1988, Mr Lee Kuan Yew officially opened the NTUC Pasir Ris Resort.

Mr Ong Teng Cheong, then Secretary-General of NTUC, mooted the idea of developing a golf and country club in 2007, as he wanted workers to have “a fair share of the fruits of Singapore’s economic progress” in recognition of their contribution.

He envisioned a golf and country club which would be affordable to workers, so that “golf will no longer be a game for executives only” as he put it. Mr Ong also oversaw the building of Orchid Country Club and the NTUC resort at Pasir Ris for union members to enjoy.

Downtown East was opened in 2000 by NTUC Club after it redeveloped NTUC Pasir Ris Resort. It is now one of the largest lifestyle and recreational hubs in Singapore with resort facilities (D’Resort), a water park (Wild Wild Wet), choices for union and corporate events, and offers a broad variety of dining and retail options.

In present day Singapore, Downtown East is having their open house on 7 July 2019, Sunday, 12-9pm to celebrate how much their communities have grown and blossomed.

D’Dash is just one of a variety of activities for Downtown East’s Communities Open House.
