Off The Beaten Track: Seletar Aerospace & Surrounds (& A Hidden Cinema You Never Realised Existed!)

If you’re looking for a completely different environment to spend a half or full day exploring, consider the Seletar Aerospace & surrounds.

This place is best explored with your own transport (personal mobility devices counted), unless you narrow down to one or two specific locations and take a bus or taxi.

So what could you possibly do at Seletar Aerospace?

Let’s get acquainted with the major destinations which are suitable for families of all ages, couples and even gatherings of friends just kaypoh-ing around the area.

If you’re sick of the usual places to go on a family outing, romantic date (Valentine’s Day is coming) or chill with friends, you should consider exploring the Seletar Aerospace area and surrounds.

1. East and South Side of Seletar Aerospace

Eating:

#8 Soek Seng Bicycle Cafe (popular with all ages, cyclists, with a great view of the runway)

#13 Canteen 398 at Piccadilly (super kampung-style canteen frequented by soldiers at the nearby camp)

2. West and South side of Seletar Aerospace

Soek Seng Bicycle Cafe

Seletar Golf Course eats (I haven’t explored yet)

Seletar Airport Passenger Terminal (there’s one vending machine there, and more vehicles than humans as far as I could see)

ST Aerospace canteen (it looks like a private canteen only for staff)

Sightseeing:

Yishun dam and surrounds (This place is so happening, people even transport their tents, sofas and BBQ pits here. Many aspiring fishermen regularly trespass into the restricted area and get arrested. There is a private fishing village where topless uncles live with generators, outdoor portable toilets and enjoy the last vestiges of kampung life by the sea in Singapore, with aerospace MNCs just across the road.)

Animal Resort at Seletar West Farmway (Bring your kids here to interact with a horse, rabbits, guinea pigs, various fowl, fish and dogs. You can purchase animal feed. Free parking but limited lots. Bring insect repellent and don’t complain to AVA about the animals.)

Sightseeing:

If you explore the North-west side of the Oval (the XXXX on the map above), there are many dilapidated, unused colonial bungalows which I feel could have been better maintained and rented out.

I even saw one bungalow with its own path leading straight to the runway! Walk here at night for the extra creepy feeling.

4. North East of Seletar Aerospace

There’s a Park Connector that from Marina Country Club that leads to Punggol End, and extends to Coney Island.

You can rent bicycles from Wheeelers.

Sand dunes along the road… with pipes sticking out of their bases.

Rainbow-coloured PPT 1B dormitories for migrant workers opposite Marina Country Club (It’s like a mini heartland mall for these migrant workers so they can choose to save money on travelling outside to the nearest centre which is Punggol. There’re even a cinema, gym, minimart, barber, mobile phone store, canteen, ATM and exercise areas inside!!)

Seletar Aerospace and surrounds never ceases to amaze me, and I bet there are many more hidden gems inside this part of Singapore which is an eclectic mishmash of kampung X colonial X military X aerospace industrial park X sand dunes X marina X foreign worker dormitory X unexplored, undeveloped land.
